The Albuquerque Sol claimed three of seven possible awards at the Premier Development League annual meeting in Tampa, Florida. The Sol earned the hat trick for its innovative and inventive sales work to boost ticket sales and attendance.
WINNER Best Team Scarf
The Albuquerque Sol held an open contest soliciting designs that reflect the spirit and image of New Mexico and Albuquerque. The 2017 edition was turquoise with a red ribbon highlighting the Sandia mountains the Zia symbol. The winning design was submitted by Berenise Miramontes, an employee & alumnus of UNM!

The Sol cut a Television commercial with the help of Nijian Productions, Cliffdweller Digital and narrated with the emphatic voice of local Poet Laureate and ABQ Resident Hakim Bellamy. The commercial is available on its YouTube page. Part of the footage was shot at the Rail Yards in downtown Albuquerque. It shows a contingent of passionate Sol fans marching clad in Sol gear with flags, horns, and drums. The fans cheer on Sol players practicing their craft. Other parts were shot by Cliffdweller Digital around New Mexico capturing the sights and sounds of the land of enchantment.
WINNER Best Season Ticket Sales Campaign
This season, the Sol unveiled the “Soldado” campaign to attract new season ticket holders. Soldado members received a personalized engraved metal business card featuring a unique identification number the Sol logo. Soldado members were able flash their member card at local retail businesses such as Starr Brothers Brewing or Positive Energy Solar for exclusive discounts.
“I’m immensely proud of the club personnel, volunteers, and fans for all their hard work on a great 2017 season,” Team President Ron Patel said. “We happily and humbly accept these league awards on behalf of every affiliated with the Sol. These awards are a recognition of our successful community engagement campaigns and I can’t wait for 2018.”
The PDL annual meeting is the chance for club leadership personnel from the 76 teams to get together to share and study best business practices. The meeting offers insights on sales, marketing, club growth, and game day work.
“The 2017 Albuquerque Sol season had the strongest attendance in our existence,” Sol GM Larry Espinoza. “The Sol remains focused on unifying and uplifting the Albuquerque area through our work in the community and success on the soccer field. These three awards signal that we’re on the right track as a franchise and I can’t wait to keep growing, investing, and improving.”
Someday the Albuquerque Sol will have a prominent trophy case in its own stadium in the heart of the Duke City. But for now, awards won for work on or off the field will reside in the corporate office.
The Sol compete in the Premier Development League, the fourth tier of American professional soccer. The PDL is part of the United Soccer Leagues. The USL also operates the Division II USL, the newly-announced Division III league and Super Y League. The PDL has served as the proven stepping-stone for aspiring professionals.
Nearly 70 percent of all MLS SuperDraft selections since 2010 have PDL experience, including a total of 59 alums chosen in 2017. Notable PDL alums include Newcastle United FC defender DeAndre Yedlin, 2016 MLS Rookie of the Year Jordan Morris, 2016 MLS Defender of the Year Matt Hedges, and U.S. Men’s National Team members Darlington Nagbe, Brad Guzan, Geoff Cameron, and Tim Ream.
